Nihon Mura Japanese Restaurant @ Kallang Leisure Park

Located at the top floor of the Kallang Leisure Park shopping mall, Nihon Mura Japanese Restaurant in Singapore has a name that means “Japanese village.” So the whole theme of the eatery is based on this concept. Instead of being presented with a menu, diners walk around the little “food market” to pick up ice cream sticks that are each labelled with a dish. You then present the sticks you have selected, to the payment counter, to place your orders and pay for the food. I recently tried out this interesting Japanese restaurant in Singapore.

The Menu

The food included a range of Japanese side dishes, such as sushi and tempura and an assortment of grilled meats and seafood dishes. As well, for those who want a more substantial meal, rice and noodle dishes are also available. Drinks served, range from green tea to Western-style drinks such as milkshakes and fruit juices. We ordered a variety of small dishes. These were the prawn tempura, crispy salmon skin, kani maki and agedashi tofu. We also had a bowl of plain ramen each to add some carbs to the meal.

Prawn tempura

This was served piping hot and the taste was really good. The prawns were not overcooked and the tempura batter was light and crispy, without being too oily. It was probably one of the better dishes available at this eatery, in my opinion.

 Crispy Salmon Skin

Crispy Salmon Skin

I was a little disappointed with this dish, because it was served slightly cold. This was a pity, because I rather liked the texture. It was extremely crunchy and reminded me of a higher-class version of potato chips. The flavour was also good, and the salmon skin had been seasoned quite well.

 Kani Maki

Kani (Crab) Maki

This was a rather average dish and I have tasted better kani maki. The seaweed wrapped around the meat did not have a very crunchy texture and the rice was also more soggy than I would have liked. While it was good to balance out some of the other richly flavoured dishes, it was not the best kani maki that I have had.

 Agedashi Tofu

Agedashi Tofu

This dish was decent, but it was not the best version that I have tried either. The tofu was silky and smooth, but I thought the tempura-style batter was a little thick for my liking. There was also not enough soya sauce based gravy present in the dish, so the batter did not soak up the gravy evenly. As a result, I got both dry and soaked parts of tofu – which did not go well together. The pieces were also a little big to easily pop into the mouth.

Plain Ramen

I thought this ramen dish was pretty good. Like most plain ramen dishes, it was served with half an egg, Japanese fishcakes and some spring onions. The noodles were springy and the egg flavour was not too strong. As well, the soup tasted quite decent.

Overall Comments

This is a decent Japanese restaurant in Singapore if you are craving for Japanese fare near the National Stadium. But it is not the best Japanese restaurant in Singapore I have eaten at.
