Some Challenging Routes for Training Runs in Singapore

You have been doing regular runs around your neighbourhood and along favourite routes. But now you feel like trying out more challenging ones. Here are some routes that runners can use, to push themselves further.

When you're running at MacRitchie, keep an eye out for the monkeys.

MacRitchie Reservoir

The numerous trails, muddy ground and uneven terrain that MacRitchie Reservoir has to offer can be a challenge for even seasoned runners. Because of the terrain, you’ll have to be careful about where you step. Also note that you may have to do a combination of running and walking because of steep slopes and sudden drops of the ground, if you are not used to running on such terrain.

Altogether, there are four different trails that you can tackle and the hardest one is the 9.7km trail that runs from one end of the reservoir to the other. But if you want the challenge, this is a great place to do your runs.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

This area in Singapore offers some beautiful scenery in the form of lovely flora and fauna. In fact it is one of the prettiest areas in Singapore and it is probably a hit with hikers and photographers because of this.

But at the same time, it is also a challenging place to run because of the slopes, stairs and tough terrain. In fact, the Bukit Timah Hill section is probably the toughest part of this trail run. Even though the route measures about 3km to 4km in total, it is upslope all the way and even the most seasoned runners definitely won’t be able to clock a personal best on this route.

The route may be challenging, but the view at the top is worth it.

Henderson Waves and the Southern Ridges

This is not a trail route, so if you don’t like muddy ground, but are still seeking a challenge, it is a good route to tackle. The most challenging section of this route is the 300-metre Henderson Waves, which is upslope all the way and is 36 metres above ground level at Henderson Road. But once you have reached the top, you will be rewarded with a really magnificent view of Singapore. If you are trying this route – make sure that you are fit first.

Fort Canning Park

Just overlooking Orchard Road, this park is very centrally located so you can chill out for a drink at the mall after a hard run here. At the same time, the lovely scenery of some of Singapore’s most spectacular historical sites also promises a feast for the eyes, as this place is literally a combination of ancient and modern Singapore.

The running route itself is considerably challenging though. While it is only 3km in length, you are practically running uphill all the way. There is also a rather lengthy staircase to tackle along this route, so it also adds to the challenge. But the rewards and scenery make taking on this challenge, worth it.
