Said Michele Schofield, Senior Vice President, Programming and Production, A+E Networks Asia, “MasterChef Asia is the biggest original production we have ever undertaken on Lifetime Asia. Producing one of the world’s most successful formats is testament to Lifetime being a leading entertainment destination in Asia. With the passion for food that we have in Asia, we believe that audiences here will no doubt, be rooting for their favourite contestants.”

Indeed, Singaporeans catching this show will have somebody to root for – because there are three Singaporean home cooks competing not only for personal glory, but also for national pride and to win the title of MasterChef Asia.

Who are the Singaporeans?

The three Singaporeans featured are Lennard Yeong, Woo Wai Leong and Sandrian Tan.

27-year-old Yeong, an engineer, has honed his culinary skills over the past five years by preparing local dishes with modern twists. He hopes to make his cooking passion become his career by appearing on MasterChef Asia.

A professed food geek, Woo, a practising lawyer, started cooking in his teens and has taken part in cooking shows during his university days. He also loves reading about food and experimenting with basic ingredients and he believes he has what it takes to become Asia’s first MasterChef.

Tan, who is of Thai-Chinese parentage, has worked in the semiconductor industry for the past eight years before recently becoming a home-maker. She considers herself a strong contender in MasterChef Asia, as she has honed her culinary skills since her childhood days when she used to help her mother pound spices in the kitchen.

To win the title though, Yeong, Woo and Tan have to fight it out in the kitchen against aspiring home cooks from China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam.

What the winner receives

The eventual first MasterChef winner will receive their own cookbook, USD50,000 in cash, USD10,000 worth of unique leisure experiences in Singapore, USD15,000 worth of Panasonic home appliances, a paid internship as a chef at one of Carlton Hotel Singapore’s restaurants and a one-week stay at the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.

MasterChef Asia premieres on 3 September, Thursday at 9pm on Lifetime (StarHub TV Channel 514).
