Last Saturday, I found myself frantically trying to escape from vengeful Walkers (zombies) – as a survivor of the apocalypse. At the same time, I was required to solve a series of clues to try and locate a sanctuary away from them.
Real-life escape game based on The Walking Dead
Together with five other friends, I had been taking part in a real-life escape game, which was based on the end of fourth season of The Walking Dead.
Entitled The Walking Dead Terminus Escape, the game, conceptualised by FOX in partnership with SingTel mio TV and Xcape Singapore, was devised to whet the appetite of fans of the popular TV series for the new fifth episode. This had premiered last evening.
Gathered at the tracks of the Bukit Timah Railway Station
Together with more than 400 fellow survivors of the apocalypse, my friends and I had gathered at the tracks of the former Bukit Timah Railway Station. Following these tracks would promise to lead us to the safety of Terminus – a sanctuary from the zombies.
Unlocking clues to solve the riddles and find a sanctuary from the Walkers
My role was to unlock important clues to open chests, obtain keys and figure out the location and meaning of the next clue – which would eventually lead us to the answer of the final riddle. At the same time, we also tried to help other survivors who had been chained to the railway tracks – as zombie bait.
Finding the key that would unlock the chains had taken us some time and with the zombies closing in on us fast, this was certainly no easy feat. But the good thing about all of this was that at least none of our gang of survivors actually became zombie food! So that was a rather huge relief.
Other survivors had been trapped inside a container
At the same time, I noticed that some of our fellow survivors had been trapped inside a container and they were required to solve clues to free themselves. This saw strong teamwork and new relationships forming between complete strangers.
Said 18-year-old student Wee Ye Xuan, who had been one of those trapped in the container, “We were all working together to solve the code. There was none of the whole ‘you are from a different team’ mindset.’ We were all just focused on surviving and getting out of the container.”
Is there really a way out?
As the minutes ticked by, I found myself getting hopelessly lost and confused, even after our final two teammates – one who was chained on the tracks and another who was trapped inside the container – had been rescued. I felt as though we would never actually escape from these zombies and that we would be all left to become dinner for the Walkers.
While searching for a way out, we also picked up helpful supplies that we could find along the way. These included panadol capsules, black stones and peanut butter – useful aids in our survival and search for a possible escape plan.
Terminus: A Possible Sanctuary
As we searched for clues to get away from the zombies, a ray of hope soon shone through, when we discovered some clues pointing us to Terminus.
But where was Terminus? My friends and I continued searching for clues and puzzling over the many riddles that we found.
That is, until we saw a map on the wall. Ah, this was a major clue! It was probably the most vital bit of information that we had seen in a while, too. And with the help of this map, we managed to plot an escape route that would take us straight to Terminus – and so we set off almost immediately – with the vengeful zombies constantly on the prowl.
During the journey to Terminus, a couple of my gang of teammates almost got captured and bitten. But fortunately, we managed to lure away the zombies before my friends became zombie food – by the skin of their teeth.
We made it to Terminus safely
In the end, to our sheer relief, we all made it to Terminus safely – and it was indeed a relief that we had managed to escape from the Walkers in one piece. Upon reaching Terminus, we checked each other for bite marks. Besides a few minor scratches, none of us were showing any signs of becoming one of the undead – fortunately.
Is Terminus really a sanctuary after all?
But will Terminus really be a sanctuary, from the Walkers? Or is it a trap?
Find out the answer to this and more, on The Walking Dead Season 5.
