The midseason finale of The Walking Dead will be shown on FOX tomorrow, on the 1st of December at 9pm. Over the past few weeks, you have witnessed Rick and his gang’s attempts to survive from the zombie apocalypse in a suspenseful and nail-biting Season 5.

But no matter what happens to Rick and his gang come Monday, the zombie apocalypse will continue in reel-life… on our television screens, with Season 6 having been promised.

With that in mind, what are humanity’s chances of surviving a real-life zombie apocalypse, or other potential doomsday scenarios?

These chances are rated below, on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest and 1 the lowest.

Zombie Apocalypse

The Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead puts humanity square in the face of a zombie apocalypse. Another potential zombie apocalypse scenario I can think of, is the popular smartphone fitness app, Zombies, Run! As the name suggests, you are supposed to literally run away from zombies – thus, getting fit and developing a running regime in this manner.

I think humanity has a very high chance of surviving a zombie apocalypse – because zombies don’t have brains. As we can see in The Walking Dead, it is easy to out-think them and shoot them. They shuffle all over the place and can only move in a straight line.

Besides zombies, machines can easily take over the world, too, as we have seen in popular movies such as Matrix, I, Robot and Terminator.

Our chances of surviving a machine onslaught may be slightly lower than that of zombies because depending on how humans had created these machines in the first place, they may be able to out-think us. But on the other hand, since we created them in the first place, surely there must be a kill switch somewhere, right?

Alien Invasion

Independence Day.

Independence Day

Aliens come in all forms, shapes and sizes, as you have probably seen from movies such as Falling Skies, Independence Day and possibly even The Avengers.

However our survival against extra-terrestrial beings, may depend on many factors, including how smart they are and how advanced their weaponry and arsenal is. On the other hand, what may be their reason for invading Earth? Would we be able to call a truce and clarify any misunderstandings, or would they be simply out to kill and take over Earth for themselves?

Survival Rating: Highly dependent on the quality of the aliens that you are battling. Can range from 0/5 to 5/5.

Supernatural Creatures

We have read plenty of stories and movies about evil supernatural beings from the third dimension. Who hasn’t heard of Dracula and Frankenstein’s Monster? Who has not heard the tales about the ancient Egyptian mummies coming to life? Or how about those evil spirits from Hell?

If these beings were to come together and escape through a portal and enter our world, we may be at the complete mercy of these beings. They possess powers that we humans don’t have, after all – if you’re not Superman, that is. Unless, of course for example, the vampires coincidentally happen to be vegetarians like the sparkly Edward Cullen from Twilight.

Global Warming and other Environmental Disasters

Environmental disasters.

Environmental disasters

Nolan’s recent movie Interstellar clearly depicts Earth at the complete mercy of the environment, and humans having to search for a new place to live. Another recent such movie, is The Day After Tomorrow, where the 2012 Mayan doomsday prophecy came true.

If these environmental catastrophes were to strike us for real, our chances of survival would be almost nil – and our only hopes to prevent the eradication of the human race, may be to venture to outer space to find a new planet to call home, and re-populate humanity from scratch.
