They are top of the Barclays Premier League (BPL) table and currently have maximum points in the so-called “Group of Death” in the Champions League. Is it finally Arsenal’s season?
The long-suffering Gunners fans have endured the side without a single trophy since 2005, and the last Premier League trophy came way back in 2004. But this season, with their main title rivals Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City apparently faltering in their first few games, this could finally be Arsenal’s season. Gooners can finally experience the wonderful feeling of winning titles again.
Here is why I believe that Arsenal may just nick the BPL title this season, based purely on the early form in the first few games of the Premier League.
Very few changes to the first team resulting in core squad stability
Unlike Manchester United, which has undergone massive changes, there have been few changes to the Arsenal first team.
Manager Arsene Wenger recently celebrated his 17th anniversary at the club on a high note, with a victory. As well, the core of the Arsenal first-team squad has remained quite consistent. In fact, the only players that Wenger has signed during the summer are Emiliano Viviano (goalkeeper), Yaya Sanogo (striker), Mathieu Flamini (midfielder), and of course, club record transfer-fee signing Mesut Oezil (playmaker).
It is this level of stability that is definitely helping Arsenal at this stage. The players know each other inside out and they are able to click very well as a team. And if the core players at the club can stay injury-free, then Arsenal fans can definitely look forward to celebrating the BPL trophy come May next year.
Oezil, Oezil and Oezil
He has been a complete revelation in Arsenal’s first few games – having created plenty of goals for his team members and just scored his first one recently, against Napoli in the Champions League.
His statistics at Real Madrid speak for themselves. This German international clocked up 161 assists for the Spanish giants in just 159 games, which practically works out to be an average of more than one assist per game.
So then, as long as Oezil can stay injury free and continues to perform as well as he has in the past few games, then Arsenal has a great chance of winning the BPL title this season.
As well, signing Oezil gives a strong intent to the rest of the BPL that they are out to actually win the title – and not a “selling club” which offloads all its best players, like what has happened in the past few seasons, with Thierry Henry and then Cesc Fabregas.
Offloading of mediocre “bench warmers” who may otherwise create bad blood
During the pre-season, Arsenal got rid of the “so-so” players who weren’t cut out for a club of their calibre. In total, a massive 23 players were culled from the North London club. They included Andrei Arshavin, Denílson (Denílson Pereira Neves), Vito Mannone, Andre Santos, Sebastien Squillaci, Marouanne Chamakh and Gervinho.
Of course, while all of these are decent players, they are just not the ones who are able to perform consistently enough and win a game week in and week out, for a top club such as Arsenal, as they do not have the ability, even though they might believe that they are good enough for the first team and may simply want to play for the sake of it.
And Wenger’s fearlessness in removing them from the squad is a good sign, because then he won’t be lumbered with players who insist on getting games, despite not being able to perform to maintain the club’s high standards.
Confidence is Sky-High and they’re Top of the Table
Being top of the table, even at this early stage of the season, can do wonders for a team’s confidence levels. This will make the players continue to believe in themselves.
The more games they win and the more points they gain, the players’ confidence in their abilities as footballers will grow stronger, and they will thus continue to push on and create a winning mentality – as what is happening at Arsenal FC right now.
And it is such a positive mentality that will eventually lead to the BPL trophy for Arsenal.
