Marathon Category Sold Out @ Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2017

The Marathon category at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) 2017 has officially closed, with more than 12,500 runners having signed up for the Marathon category. This is a 20 per cent year on year increase from 2016.

The Marathon category ay SCSM has officially sold out.

Encouraging to see so many runners ‘trading up’

Said Geoff Meyer, Managing Director of IRONMAN Asia, the organisers of the race, “This year, we have had numerous initiatives like pacer runs, the women’s squad and clinics to educate and empower runners to trade up. It is very encouraging to see that these have led to the Marathon category selling out for the first time in many years and less than 200 places remaining in the Half Marathon.”

He added, “In addition, the introduction of the new route with iconic Singapore landmarks and added entertainment have led to the Marathon going truly international, attracting close to 50,000 runners from 126 nationalities.”

Runners can look forward to new race routes

Runners taking part in the Marathon can look forward to new routes which will take them through some of the most iconic heritage locations of Singapore such as Little India, Chinatown and the DownTown Core.

I must say that the new Marathon route is something that I am certainly looking forward to this year – because previous years of the Marathon had featured more than 20km of running along East Coast Park.

SCSM has grown in size and statute over the years

According to IRONMAN Asia, the SCSM has developed significantly over the years, in terms of size and statute, attracting an average of close to 50,000 runners each year. Amongst the registrations. 48 per cent of runners in the Marathon category are non-Singaporeans, with 37 per cent from other parts of Asia.

Jasmine Goh will be one of the elites taking part in the National Championships.

Said Meyer, “These numbers show that the SCSM is one of the most attractive races in the region. As a city, Singapore has a lot to offer runners and we are working towards delivering a top class race experience for everyone at the race this year.”

Marathon Race will double up as the National Championships

Additionally, the Marathon Race will also double up as the National Championships this year, as the SCSM, now into its 16th year, bids to join the Abbot World Marathon Majors.  So this has attracted many elite Singaporean  runners such as Soh Rui Yong, Ashley Liew, Rachel See, Neo JieShi, Jasmine Goh and Evan Chee, to take part in the event.

The SCSM is also Singapore’s only International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Gold Label event.

Runners who want to be a part of the excitement, can still take part in the 10km Race and Half Marathon.

Registrations for the 10km Race and Half Marathon are still open

For runners who are still sitting on the fence about whether to participate, registrations are still open for the 10km Race as well as the Half Marathon. But these too, are expected to sell out soon.

Runners can sign up at www.singaporemarathon.com but IRONMAN Asia urges them to do so quickly.

This is because the Half Marathon has less than 200 slots and the 10km Race has less than 400 slots still available.
