Mata Amazing Race – A Self Supported, Self Navigation Free Running Race, this May

A new race concept in Singapore, the Mata Amazing Race 2017 is a self supported, self navigation no-frills free-of-charge run, where runners need to work together as teams of three, in order to solve clues, Amazing Race style, whilst navigate themselves purely on foot, from one checkpoint to the next. This novel running race takes place on the 7th of May.

Mata Amazing race is a self supported, self navigation, no frills race.

The race, of which the approximate distance is 12km will have a four hour time limit and runners are flagged off at 7.30am at Bayfront Avenue and is being co-organised by four race directors. The nearest MRT Station is Bayfront.

Being a self supported event, do note that water and food will not be provided. So runners should remember to bring some cash so that they can buy supplies from the nearby provision shops or supermarkets. However pacers or support crew will be permitted.

How the idea had came about

What had given the organisers the idea to put together this interesting and novel race? Said Eugene Aw, in his 30s, and one of the race organisers “The event was an idea together with my three running kakis – Jason, Steven and Tony, during one of our runs.”

He continued, “Knowing there are plenty of running events here every weekend in Singapore and not forgetting the expensive race fees that runners need to pay to take part, we have decided that it is time to give back to the running community by creating this no-frills, free run that anyone can join in, regardless of age, speed, beliefs and nationalities.”

This event is quite different to most of the other running races in Singapore.

Compulsory for teams to take a wefie at each checkpoint

Eugene also urges runners to take part, at the same time stressing that the race is set to be “amazing” as the name suggests. He explained, “It’s unique on its own. Runners need to form teams of three members. On the race day teams will be provided a list of checkpoints that they will need to locate.”

Continued Eugene, “It will be compulsory for all three members to take a wefie with the checkpoints as proof they have completed each designated checkpoint. To make it more fun and challenging, the running route will only be revealed on race day. The fastest team to cross the finish line with all three members having reached all the correct checkpoints will be the winner.”’

First in Singapore to design this race concept

According to Eugene, he is confident that he and his running buddies are the first to come up with this type of race concept. He said, “If I am not wrong, we are the first to have this concept where teams need to locate the checkpoints given and take a wefie or photo with the checkpoint.”

The organisers hope to be able to give back to the large community of local runners.

He added “And the best part is that you do not need to pay a single cent to enjoy this event. To make it that little bit more special too, we will be giving out trophies to the first to fifth placed teams.”

Hoping to give back to the running community and develop relationships

Through taking part in this race, Eugene hopes to give back to the running community in Singapore. He said, “we want to build up the bonding and relationship between runners and friends and even get family members to join this event. Teamwork is vital in this race. Sports should not be limited to one person; it should be for everyone and anyone to enjoy.”

Continued Eugene, “But what is most important though, is that each and every participant has fun and by the end of the day, we are hoping that everyone can learn something about themselves and each other.”

The organisers hope that those taking part in their race, can have plenty of fun.
