Skechers Blacklight Run: World’s Largest Night Time 5K Run-Party comes to Singapore

Come 29 October this year, the world’s largest and brightest Night Time 5K run cum party – the Skechers Blacklight Run – will finally reach Singapore shores.

A first for Singapore and Asia, the Skechers Blacklight Run will be held at  the beautiful Palawan Green on Sentosa, and the event is being put together by Singapore event specialists, Orange Room – the organisers of the Singapore TRI-FACTOR Series and the Singapore International Triathlon.

Blacklight Run is coming to Singapore for the first time

Said Elvin Ting, Managing Director of Orange Room Pte Ltd, “Blacklight Run is from the USA and it has grown to become the world’s largest night time 5K. We want people in Asia to experience this and we are very excited to bring this unique, world-class event to Singapore for the very first time.”

Runners at the Blacklight Run can expect to experience three Blacklight Zones along the course, each with a distinctive colour – green, pink and orange, where runners will be showered in Blacklight Run special Neon Glow Powder which glows in the dark.

Added Zann Lee, General Manager of title sponsor Skechers Singapore Pte Ltd, “The Skechers Blacklight Run is perfect for anyone who loves exercise, music and wants to enjoy an exciting night time run in Singapore. Participants will enjoy memorable moments throughout the 5km distance.”

She added, “At the run, we are expecting runners of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life. Children below six years old also get to run or walk for free.”

Overall the organisers are expecting more than 7,000 participants to register and turn up for the Skechers Blacklight Run.

Powder is safe and non-toxic

Ting and Lee had been speaking at the Skechers Blacklight Run’s press conference, which had taken place yesterday morning at Velocity @ Novena Square.

And at the launch event, Ting had also made it a point to stress that the powder is 100 per cent safe and non toxic. He said, “We have tested the powder in terms of its combustibility and safety levels to make sure it is 100 per cent safe. Even kids can come in and enjoy the fun. It is also soft like talcum powder, so you will hardly feel it being thrown at you.”

Members of the media also had a chance to “experience” the Blacklight Run glow powder for ourselves at the launch event. Using neon glow marking pens that resembles the powder that we would get at the race, we drew patterns on ourselves, before then heading into a blacked-out tunnel, similar to what race goers would experience.

Said Ting, “We had blacked out the tunnel and installed UV lights into it.”

In short, the experience was quite amazing and interesting. The pen markings had literally glowed under the dark light and I felt as though my skin was glowing in the dark. Though I also soon realised that the glowing effect is more pronounced when standing directly underneath the special black UV lights. It would certainly be interesting to see how this effect is played out at the race, on a much larger scale.

“DJ Automatic” coming in from the States to play

But the Blacklight Run is not only about the glow powder and black lights though. It is also largely about the music, and coming in all the way from the USA is guest DJ, “DJ Automatic” and the original Blacklight Run DJ in the States. “DJ Automatic” – who has previously shared the stage with other famous personalities such as Kayne West and Lil’ John.

Said Ting, “We are flying in DJ Automatic for the inaugural Singapore event and he will be on stage alongside other great acts to make sure that the Skechers Blacklight Run After Party is an unforgettable experience for all.”

Joining him on stage at the Skechers Blacklight Run, will also be one of Singapore’s most exciting newcomers to the dJ-ing scene, DJ Jade Rasif from one of Singapore’s most popular nightclubs, Zouk – together with her friends DJ Red and DJ Reiko Zhang.

Said Rasif, “This event will be the first of its kind in Singapore. People here want to stay healthy but want good fun at the same time, and I think this run marries both of those, who that’s great.”

She added, “I can’t tell you what music I will be playing on race day, but I want it to be fun and energetic.”

Organisers promise a great time for all

Ting guarantees a great and fun time for all runners at the Skechers Blacklight Run. He said, “Everyone will have a great time on the course whether you run or walk and the Skechers Blacklight Run after-party will be the best on the planet.”

He added, “And whatever you choose to wear, be ready to finish a different colour to what you started. And be sure to bring your phones and cameras to snap the memories.”
