What does your favourite exercise say about your personality?

UK-based research firm MindLab did a study on 2,000 adults to determine whether there are differences between athletes who take part in different sports and if this says something about their personality.

To determine the various personality types, they had used the popular Myers–Briggs personality test – which is a common tool that is used to determine people’s personality type and individual preferences.

And MindLab had found that there are indeed differences between individuals and their sport of choice.

This post has been adapted from a Health Plus article put out by the Mount Elizabeth Hospitals Group, which also shares some useful information about how each of these exercises can help in terms of your heart health.

So for your reading pleasure, here is a summary of the results of this MindLab study and how each of these exercises can benefit your heart.

Runners

For runners, MindLab found that they like to be at the centre of attention and are generally extroverts.

Also, MindLab discovered that for music preferences, runners tend to like more lively and upbeat music.

Running, according to the Mount Elizabeth Hospitals Group, can also cut down your risk of dying from heart disease by 45 per cent. And in order to achieve these benefits, you only need to run for a minimum of 5-10 minutes per day.

Walkers

For this group of people, MindLab found that they tend to prefer their own company and are typically more introverted individuals, in terms of their personality type.

And according to the Mount Elizabeth Hospitals Group, if you consistently clock at least 10,000 steps each and every day through walking, you will see a reduction in your blood pressure, 24 weeks later.

Cyclists

For cyclists, MindLab found that they are generally more laid back and less likely to succumb to depression or stress.

As well, cyclists tend to be more materialistic than athletes who take part in other sports – so for example, this is why cyclists always have the urge to keep on upgrading their bikes and equipment, and buy the latest and best that is out there in the market.

And also, the Mount Elizabeth Hospitals Group, added that cycling for an average of 30km per week can cut down your risk of coronary heart disease by at about 50 per cent.

Swimmers

MindLab found out that swimmers are very organised people and at the same time, tend to be more generous individuals too, when it comes to helping charities.

As well, they also found that swimmers are less prone to stress and depression as compared to the average person, and that they also make the best lovers too.

And swimming, according to the Mount Elizabeth Hospitals Group, is one of the best forms of exercise for those who are looking to lose weight. And because weight is directly related to heart health, this in turn, can also keep your heart healthy at the same time.
