This year’s edition of the OSIM Sundown Marathon will see new components such as the inaugural Sundown Zone – where both runners and supporters can engage in other sporting activities such as a 3-on-3 Open basketball competition, a Dodgeball tournament and a Zumba class.

Through organising fringe events, the organisers hope to attract more fresh blood to run in the Sundown Marathon. Said Adrian Mok, Managing Director of HiVelocity Events (organisers of the OSIM Sundown Marathon), in a quote to TODAY Online, “Adding fresh components to the overall race atmosphere will appeal, and help to attract, many other new running demographics to join the event in future.”

More than 27,000 runners taking part 

At the same time though, the 2016 Sundown Marathon is already set to be the largest edition ever – with more than 27,000 runners having signed up for the event, which flags off on 28 May from the F1 Pit Building.

The runners will be participating across the four different race categories, the 42.195km Full Marathon, 21.1km Half Marathon, 10km Competitive Run and the 5km Fun Run.

This figure surpasses last year’s attendance of 26,500 runners and can be attributed to the increasing appeal of Sundown Marathon to runners from around the region – about 43% of runners are from Malaysia, Philippines and China – an increase of 39% from the number of foreigners taking part last year. There are also some runners from other further countries though, such as United Kingdom, Netherlands and Costa Rica.

Said Mok, “Participation figures from overseas has exceeded expectations and this is in line with our effort to expand the event regionally.”

Besides foreigners, runners also come from corporate sign-ups from companies such as SingTel and DBS, Standard Chartered Bank and Hewlett Packard, all of which are realising the importance of helping their employees to keep fit.

Since its first edition in 2008, the OSIM Sundown Marathon – which has recently been acquired by 4FU Pte Ltd, has seen a steady surge in the number of runners taking part. In the inaugural edition, there had been 6,000 runners participating in Singapore’s only Night Marathon, showing a four and a half fold increase since the first edition.

Due to the overwhelming response, registration for the OSIM Sundown Marathon 2016 has been extended to today, Thursday 19 May, 2016.
