Food Review: Banana Kaya Dessert @ Domino’s Pizza Singapore

Since my childhood days, kaya (coconut jam) toast has always been a main staple of my breakfast diet. Like many families, I always used to look forward to those regular trips to the nearby coffee shop with my family, for our kaya toast fix. And as I grew up, my love and fondness for kaya toast has never wavered.

A new twist on a familiar Singaporean favourite

To mark the SG50 Jubilee Year, Domino’s Pizza has recently launched a brand new twist on this familiar Singaporean breakfast dish.

They have now introduced the Banana Kaya Dessert, which has a generous slab of pandan kaya, made from rich coconut cream, fresh egg and fragrant pandan leaves – all spread over a Domino’s pizza base. It is then topped with oven-baked banana slices and finally, sprinkled with icing sugar.

The Banana Kaya Pizza is about the size of a typical personal pan pizza. This means that if you are feeling particularly hungry, you can gobble up the entire pizza by yourself. Or you can choose to share it with your family or friends, if you have had a lot for dinner prior to ordering the pizza.

Trying out the pizza

When I tried the Banana Kaya Dessert at a Bloggers’ Tasting Session, it immediately evoked a sense of nostalgia in me and reminded me of those carefree childhood days, of heading off to the coffee shop for kaya toast, with my family. The flavour of the kaya in the dessert was rich and satisfying and I thought that the bananas were an interesting addition to the pizza – the fruit did not overwhelm the taste of the kaya. The bananas gave the kaya a slightly fruity, sweeter flavour, that I thought, had balanced out the dessert quite well.

The sprinkling of icing sugar on the top, also added a little extra sweetness to the Banana Kaya Dessert and complemented the appearance of the dessert, giving it a slightly ‘snowy’ look. The pizza base was more filling than a piece of kaya toast – so this made the dessert more satisfying.

This pizza is best eaten when it’s come straight out of the oven – while the crust is still crunchy and not soggy.
