Over the weekend, I was amongst more than 40,000 spectators were treated to non-stop, heart-pumping rugby action, engaging programmes and vibrant fanfare at the HSBC SVNS Singapore.
The enthralling festivities culminated in climatic battles that saw the New Zealand women’s team and Fiji men’s team clinch the championship trophies.
Fiji were behind 12-0 to France at the break, but scored all 21 points in the second half to shock the stadium and claim the win.

Said Jerry Matana, Fiji Sevens captain, “In those kind of games, you know, some people give up. But I would like to thank the boys for keeping working hard and keeping the composure up until the final whistle. At half time, I guess the coach said it’s not over yet. That we believe in someone who’s always behind us, our God. And he’s going to fight for us even in those tough moments”
He added, “Singapore is always special. A lovely place to come and play. We love it and it’s like playing at home, like I said.”
New Zealand completely dominated Australia from beginning to end and clinched a comfortable 36-7 win.

Said New Zealand captain Risi Pouri-Lane, “It doesn’t really get much better than a Trans-Tasman final and the Aussies are amazing, they’ve got so much depth and talent in that team as well, and we know the threats on their team. So we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game so we’ve just got to stick to our game plan, our strengths and just play together as a team.”
She added, “We won Singapore, yes, but it’s a long season ahead and we’ve just got to keep the momentum, keep the consistency going and keep building.”
@prischewdotcom Day two of the HSBC Rugby Sevens Singapore was an absolute blast! Plenty of adrenaline-pumping action and amazing vibes. Congrats to the champions, New Zealand and Fiji! #HSBCSVNS #Singapore #RugbySevens #NewZealand #Fiji ? original sound – prischewdotcom
Besides the main matches, Singapore also played host to the Ruck and Rumble tournaments which saw aspiring rugby players give it their best against a world-class backdrop. It also featured multiple sports initiatives to further propel the sport in Singapore among the young, creating more access and opportunities.

As well, the event lived up to its reputation as the Family Sevens with a hive of activities ranging from wheelchair rugby, meet and greets with Peppa Pig, My Little Pony and Optimus Prime, to engaging console games, refreshing drinks at the Beach Club area and family-friendly dining options from MeatSmith and Burnt Ends bakery.
I had a great time soaking up the event vibes, which included playing fun games such as bowling and target throwing games that were great for both adults and kids. I picked up a few “freebies” along the way too, including a super cute JellyCat style rugby ball plushie.
