To better ensure that Singapore’s seaward defence will protect our nation’s maritime interests, the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has commissioned eight new Littoral Mission Vessels (LMVs). Manufactured here in Singapore, these vessels can be quickly configured to address a wide range of mission requirements. These will range from search and rescue operations to naval combat.

But these additions to the RSN’s fleet have yet to be named. So in RSN tradition, the public is invited to name the Navy’s future Littoral Mission Vessels.

Winners will receive S$3,000 in cash prizes

The RSN’s LMV naming competition is held in association with the launch of the SAF50 exhibition at VivoCity. The winners who choose the best names for the eight LMVs will win up to $3,000 in cash prizes.

The winning entries should reflect characteristics such as the purpose and capabilities of the LMVs, the vessels they are replacing, and the history and tradition of the RSN.

Marks the third time that the public has helped to name new Navy vessels

This competition marks the third time that the RSN has organised a competition for Singaporeans to help name new vessels in its fleet. This tradition started with the Bedok-class mine countermeasure vessels and carried on when the Formidable-class stealth frigates were introduced.

First vessels to be designed and constructed in Singapore

The LMVs are also the first vessels designed and constructed in Singapore. This is a significant milestone for our small island nation.
