Securing a sustainable future is the responsibility of all Singaporeans

Explained Mr Koh Kok Sin, Chairperson of the FairPrice Green Committee, “It is the responsibility of Singaporeans from all walks of life, to secure a sustainable future for Planet Earth. We will keep on upgrading and making our stores as eco-friendly as possible. At the same time, we’ll a find ways to raise environmental consciousness among shoppers. Through these measures, we hope to encourage them to Think Green and Shop Green.”

He added, “We are encouraged that our customers recognise the call to care for the Earth, and share our commitment to save plastic bags and take on other sustainable initiatives. We will work together with our company stakeholders to continue to build a green and eco-friendly Singapore.”

FairPrice Green Rewards Scheme first launched in 2007

FairPrice first launched the FairPrice Green Rewards Scheme in 2007. The aim of doing so was to urge shoppers to reduce their usage of plastic bags. Also, FairPrice has given out more than $2.3 million in rebates – resulting in an estimated 46.5 million plastic bags saved. Since launching this initiative, FairPrice has seen an an annual 10 percent average increase on plastic bags saved at their stores –  with the highest number being saved last year.

Other green initiatives by FairPrice

Apart from encouraging customers to save plastic bags, for the second year running, FairPrice also switched off all non-essential lights at its stores, offices and warehouses – to support Earth Hour – which was at 8.30pm-9.30pm on March 28.

This is in addition to donating $12,500 to WWF. The Earth Hour, a global initiative, aims to educate the community on why is important to save the Earth’s resources and at the same time, to protect the environment.

Eco-friendly features in stores

To conserve energy and to reduce its carbon footprint, FairPrice has eco-friendly features in its stores, such as by using energy-saving equipment and lighting. This applies both to new stores and existing stores. Currently 60 stores have already been installed with these green features.

And several FairPrice stores have been awarded with BCA Green Mark awards. These include FairPrice Finest@ZhongShan Park and FairPrice Xtra@Kallang Wave Mall – which were given the BCA Green Mark (Platinum) awards.

And FairPrice’s headquarters in Benoi, FairPrice Hub, was also awarded with the BCA Green Mark (Platinum) award for incorporating extensive green architecture features which promote sustainability and conservation of resources.
