Media Tasting: Trying Andersen’s of Denmark Korean-inspired Bingsu desserts and fluffy waffles

To celebrate 30 years of service in Singapore, ice cream chain Andersen’s of Denmark has launched some new menu items – including a 100ml dandy cup and Korean special bingsu with a Danish fusion.

Andersen’s is known for their ice cream

The chain is known for their delectable ice cream flavours, fluffy Danish waffles and yummy ice cream cakes.

They procure premium ice cream ingredients from around the globe, including dairy products from Australia, chocolate from Belgium and flavour profiles from Denmark.

A media tasting

Members of the media were invited to Andersen’s of Denmark for a tasting session.

We got to try their fluffy waffles and the new Bingsu creations, each complete with scoops of delectable ice cream.

Fluffy waffles

Though not new, the waffles have been revamped, made using Andersen’s tried-and-tested recipe with authentic Belgian ingredients. The result is a waffle that is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

The waffles can be customised with a variety of toppings, such as fruits like bananas and berries, confectioneries such as chocolate rice, marshmallows, rainbow sprinkles and a variety of sauces. All are finished with a choice of Andersen’s premium ice cream.

Prices of the waffles start at $5.90 for a half size (one square) and $7.90 for the full size (two squares). Waffles are served with maple syrup and Chantilly cream.

Customisations are add-ons, from $1.00 extra for the confectioneries and $2.00 extra for chocolate waffles to $4.00 extra for additional scoops of ice cream.

At the media tasting, we were given two types of waffles.

For the first waffle, we had two scoops, vanilla and fruit of the forest ice cream, served with chocolate sauce, whipped cream and strawberries.

This waffle had a crunchy texture and after the initial crunch, it was soft and light on the palette. I have to say I enjoyed it.

This waffle combination was light and easy on the palette, with the crunchy waffle adding a nice texture to the melting ice cream. The chocolate drizzle gave the dessert a nice bittersweet note.

The vanilla ice cream was good and one of the better ones I’ve had – I could tell that real vanilla beans had been used.

The fruit of the forest ice cream seemed somewhat frozen in texture, especially with regards to the frozen fruit pieces inside. But otherwise, the flavour profile was enjoyable, with the slightly tangy fruity notes balancing out the sweetness of the ice cream. This goes rather well with the vanilla flavour and complements it nicely.

The second waffle combination we tried was richer and more sinful.

This one was another two scoops of ice cream, mint chocolate chip and cookies & cream flavour ice cream on a waffle decorated with strawberries, bananas, blueberries and kiwi fruit, and topped with maple syrup and cream.

This dessert tasted significantly sweeter and the texture of the waffle was also softer and more soggy because it had absorbed the maple syrup. As well, the presence of the berries also added to the overall sweetness profile.

The mint chocolate chip ice cream was nice. I enjoyed the chocolate chips and the subtle minty notes.

The cookies & cream flavour, however, didn’t seem to stand out. Probably this was because its flavour profile had been drowned out by the stronger mint chocolate ice cream.

Korean Bingsu desserts

For the Bingsu, this is a popular Korean dessert made with shaved ice and topped with fruits and ice cream.

The Bingsu at Andersen’s is priced at $14.90 each and can easily be shared by 2 persons.

We tried both the Mango Blondie and Strawberry Tickles.

The Mango Blondie, as the name suggests, consists of a fluffy milk snow topped with mangoes, cheesecake and a scoop of ice cream. We had this with blueberry ice cream.

The overall flavour combination was very enjoyable, pleasant to the taste buds. It is a very light and refreshing dessert. I liked the sweetness of the mangoes and the slight cheesy tangy notes of the cheesecake. The choice of blueberry ice cream also added a tangy sweetness to the dessert.

For the Strawberry Tickles, this is a medley of fresh strawberries, blueberries and cheesecake topped with milk snow and a choice of ice cream flavour. The media tasting one was served with what else, strawberry ice cream.

I love strawberries, so I admit that I enjoyed the strong strawberries notes from this dessert, which were enhanced further by the melting strawberry ice cream. I thought it is sweet and refreshing. The subtle tanginess from the cheesecake pieces inside the bowl added a nice note to the dessert.

Due to the sweetness of the strawberries, the flavour profile of this creation was sweeter and more distinctive to the taste buds than the Mango Blondie. Strawberry lovers will definitely lap this one up.

The other two Bingsu creations on the menu are Triple Chocolate Fantasy and Creamy Cookies, both of which sound super rich and sinful.

100ml Dandy Cup

Besides the desserts that we tried, Andersen’s is also introducing the Dandy Cup which will allow customers to enjoy single servings on the go in a 100ml packaging. This is in addition to the 473ml pint packaging.

The Dandy Cup will be available from January beginning with three flavours – chocolate, vanilla and cookies & cream.

Said David Leong, owner, Andersen’s Ice Cream Singapore, “We are excited to give our customers yet another option to enjoy Andersen’s most-loved ice cream flavours. The 100ml cup will allow Singaporeans to enjoy our premium creations on the go.”

Log Cakes

As well, ice cream log cakes will also be available this Christmas at Andersen’s in 13 flavours and three sizes – 500g, 1kg and 2kg.

Moreover, for every 100 Christmas log cakes sold, Andersen’s will plant a tree through the national Plant A Tree programme with NParks Singapore.

Andersen’s to host monthly workshops for children

Also in line with corporate social responsibility, Andersen’s will continue to host monthly workshops for children on the third Sunday of every month to cultivate good reading habits in the young.

The first workshop was held recently on 16 October.

Workshops will feature both a storytelling session and craft workshop based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales and hosted at Andersen’s flagship outlet at Jewel. Participants will each receive bookshop vouchers and a free scoop of ice cream.

Conclusion

We left the media tasting session feeling stuffed, yet satisfied.

Said Leong, “We hope to keep serving our customers with the quality we’re known for. We’ll continue sourcing the best ingredients from around the globe to create gourmet blends that speak to our customers’ palettes and hearts.”
