Review of Hello Chocolate’s small-batch, bean-to-bar craft dark chocolates

Whether you are looking for the best bean-to-bar chocolates from around the world, or sustainable and ethical chocolate gifts, you will find it available at Hello Chocolate.

Biggest online shop for bean-to-bar chocolates

They pride themselves in being the best and biggest online shop of bean-to-bar chocolate in Asia and one of the largest worldwide.

Bean-to-bar chocolate refers to small-batch, craft chocolate where the chocolatier makes the chocolate from scratch, with control over the entire process from the cocoa bean to the chocolate bar.

Such chocolate is usually of a high quality in terms of the ingredients and flavour profiles – similar to coffee and fine wine.

Mostly a dark chocolate assortment

I have written about Hello Chocolate previously.

So this is my second review of Hello Chocolates’s range.

I love dark chocolates so I simply couldn’t wait to dig into this assortment.

The chocolates which I had received were as follows.

It is a good mix of chocolates coming from all over the world.

  • Zotter Labooko 82% from Peru
  • Zotter ho ho ho mountain milk chocolate with honey marzipan
  • Chocolate bonnat 75% from Venezuela
  • Kad kokoa Chantaburi 70%
  • Raaka Pure cacao & coconut swirl 70%
  • Raaka pink sea salt 71%
  • Ambrosia bee pollen and honey chocolate 67%
  • Naive BBQ spice stone ground dark chocolate 65% from Lithuania
  • Obolo chilean sea salt 70%
  • Original Beans Arhuaco Businchari 82% from Colombia
  • Zotter 100% curvature chocolate light bulbs
  • Zotter chocolate heart with Christmas stars

I have to say that it was interesting to try these craft chocolates, though I must admit that none of them blew me away like the Pralus House barre infernal pistachio which I had the pleasure of tasting the previous time around. That particular chocolate bar had been completely out of this world.

Notable mentions

Naive BBQ Spice

Out of the chocolates, the most unusual one of the lot had to be Naive’s BBQ Spice bar.

This chocolate bar had savoury spicy notes that immediately hits you when you take the first bite. The spicy note progressively grows stronger the more you eat. At the same time, there is a slight hint of BBQ flavour that is subtle, yet pronounced. It is a very unique and unusual flavour profile.

Ambrosia Bee pollen and honey

Ambrosia’s bee pollen and honey chocolate was also quite interesting in terms of the flavour.

For this one, the chocolate flavour is not very pronounced, but the honey notes are strong. They hit you immediately when you take the first bite, and the honey flavour gradually grows stronger with the more chocolate you eat.

Raaka pink sea salt

Another notable mention was the pink sea salt bar by Raaka. This bar was particularly interesting because there are only cocoa beans, sugar and sea salt mentioned in the ingredients.

A salty flavour immediately hits you when you bite into the bar, but after gradually letting the chocolate melt on the tongue, the saltiness gives way to a fruity sensation which reminded me of a cross between summer fruits and banana. It was rather interesting.

100% light bulbs by Zotter

For Zotter’s 100% curvature light bulbs, this was surprising. It is a very rich and intense chocolate due to its high cocoa content, but it is more palatable and bitter like I may have expected originally.

If you are having a chocolate craving, one or two pieces of these would definitely be more than enough satisfy you.

The others, while still being enjoyable, did not leave as much of an impression as the ones which I had highlighted. These chocolates will definitely appeal to chocolate connoisseurs; the higher quality and smoother textures of the chocolate is definitely apparent as compared to mass-market chocolate.
