A Day of Colour, Community and Celebration for World Down Syndrome Day

On Saturday, 28 March, the Down Syndrome Association (Singapore) (DSA) marked World Down Syndrome Day with a full-day community event at Suntec City, drawing families, supporters, schools and members of the public in a strong and visible show of inclusion.

The event featured a packed programme of performances and community activities, alongside the official launch of the inaugural DSA Awards 2026. The new national platform aims to recognise the talents, achievements and contributions of individuals with Down syndrome across areas such as the arts, education, employment, advocacy and sport.

A key highlight of the day was DSA’s successful verification by the Singapore Book of Records for the largest gathering of people wearing mismatched socks: a global symbol of Down syndrome awareness. The record attempt saw enthusiastic participation from across the community, reinforcing a shared message of inclusion and solidarity.

Guest of Honour Eric Chua, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Social and Family Development, attended the event and engaged with participants, families and performers. He said: “In building a ‘We First’ society, we want to foster a community where we look out for one another. This is not something that is new to Singapore but something we must continue to build through our everyday actions and strong partnerships across the community.”

The launch of the DSA Awards marks an important step in DSA’s ongoing efforts to shift perceptions and create greater visibility for individuals with Down syndrome. By highlighting real stories of achievement and contribution, the Awards aim to inspire others within the community while encouraging broader public understanding.

Performances by DSA members, partner organisations and participating schools including Little Footprints Preschool @ Admiralty, Edgefield Secondary School, ISS International School, James Cook University and North Vista Secondary School, showcased a wide range of talent, from dance and music to martial arts and percussion.

The programme reflected both the diversity and capabilities of the Down syndrome community, as well as the strength of partnerships across the wider ecosystem.

“This year is particularly meaningful as DSA marks its 30th anniversary,” said Jonathan Seow, Chairperson of the Down Syndrome Association (Singapore). “What we see here: the participation, the performances, and the support from schools and the wider community, reflects how far we have come, and the kind of inclusive society we are continuing to build together.”

The event forms part of DSA’s wider World Down Syndrome Day celebrations. This year’s theme, “Our DSA Heart – A Lifetime of Love”, reflects a shared journey of support, inclusion and collective impact across the community.
