Commentary: The European Super League is a stupid idea

Update: According to latest developments, the six English clubs have left the European Super League.

A new breakaway football tournament called the European Super League has recently been announced.

What is the European Super League about

This new competition is set to feature 12 of Europe’s top clubs as founding members and who will be guaranteed a place in the league every season, and plans are apparently underway to begin as soon as possible.

It is set to rival the Champions League.

The 12 founding clubs which are involved in the European Super League, are Liverpool, Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan.

This is a stupid idea

I am an Arsenal fan. And I think that this is a stupid idea.

With these clubs being granted immunity to play in this league no matter what, the very idea goes against what sport truly stands for – competition, merit and excellence.

The European Super League smells of nothing but elitism and money.

I feel that the clubs which are involved in it, are forgetting that football is more than a mere business.

Yes, money talks in today’s society, but the passion and values that originally made many of us fans fall in love with these clubs, and support them over the decades, feels like it’s gone out of the window, together with the announcement of this preposterous idea.

Football is about the heart and soul

Remember the time when Leicester City won the Premier League title in 2015?

This captured the hearts of many sports fans who were cheering on Leicester as the underdogs regardless of whether we were fans of the Foxes or not.

That is the true spirit of competition, and showcases the fact that absolutely anyone can triumph, regardless of their status symbol and the amount of money they possess.

By having a breakaway Super League, such moments where the true spirit of sport and what it represents will be all but a thing of the past.

Especially with the “elite” clubs in the Premier League likely prioritising something like this European Super League, the competition in the Premier League will no longer feel the same, as playing in the domestic competition would most probably be second fiddle to playing these “top” clubs.

After all, with a guaranteed spot every season in the Super League and therefore nothing much to play for domestically, why would they want to try so hard at the domestic competition?

Are these really Europe’s best clubs?

In the first place, are these 12 founding clubs really the best 12 clubs in Europe? Based on titles and trophies, I think not.

For example, what happened to German club Bayern Munich, the most successful club in Europe with six European titles to their name?

Or Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam, a four-time winner in European competition as well as winning 34 domestic titles?

Will we still experience special European nights?

And also, with these clubs playing each other week in and out, the special European nights will be a thing of the past.

As an Arsenal fan, we may not have won any European titles, but the club has still experienced many of those special European nights, all the same. Yeah, even if not all of them had positive outcomes though.

I remember the time back in 2006 when Arsenal made it to their first ever Champions League final, but unfortunately lost to Barcelona.

Much more recently, there was that time in 2019, just before the Covid-19 coronavirus hit, when Arsenal made it to the Europa League final by beating Valencia over two legs. I had been in London at that time and it felt truly special. Sadly, Arsenal lost to Chelsea in the final.

Such moments are special because these games are rare and are a novelty. With such teams meeting each other week and out, these games will become commonplace, and will no longer feel special.

Hope this initiative can be reconsidered

I do hope that this idea of the European Super League is reconsidered before it changes the landscape of European football for good and the meaning of what the sport truly is and represents.
